How Much Does a Barbell Weigh?
A men's Olympic barbell weighs 20 kg (45 lb). A women's Olympic bar weighs 15 kg (33 lb). Here is every common bar on the rack, how standard barbell weight differs from Olympic, and how to weigh an unmarked bar.
A men's Olympic barbell weighs 20 kg (45 lb). A women's Olympic barbell weighs 15 kg (33 lb). Those two numbers are set by competition rules, which is why the straight bar on most gym racks is the one piece of kit you can usually trust without hunting for a sticker.
Everything else on that rack is a range. Trap bars, EZ bars, safety squat bars and Smith machines do not share a governing-body weight. They get their own posts. This one is the straight bar, the "standard barbell weight" confusion, and the unmarked bar you are about to log wrong.
| Bar | Typical weight (kg) | Typical weight (lb) |
|---|---|---|
| Men's Olympic barbell | 20 kg | 45 lb |
| Women's Olympic barbell | 15 kg | 33 lb |
| US-made "women's" / light Olympic bar | 15-16 kg | 35 lb |
| Training / technique bar | 10 kg | 22 lb |
| Junior / youth bar | 5-8 kg | 11-18 lb |
| 1-inch "standard" barbell | 5-12 kg | 10-25 lb |
The calculator below is preset to the 20 kg / 45 lb men's bar. If you are on a women's bar, a training bar, or anything unmarked, change the preset. The plates are not the whole number.

Is a standard barbell 45 lb?
Depends what you mean by standard, which is why this question produces two different answers on the internet.
Olympic standard: yes. A men's competition barbell is 20 kg. In pounds that is 44.09, which every gym on earth rounds to 45. Sleeves are 50 mm (2 inches). Length is 2.2 m. Grip diameter is 28 mm. If the plates you load have a 2-inch hole, this is the bar you are on, and 20 kg is the number.
"Standard" as in 1-inch plates: no. Older home bars, cheap department-store bars, and a lot of garage-gym starter kits take plates with a 1-inch hole. Those bars are shorter, thinner, and usually 5 to 12 kg (10 to 25 lb). Calling that a 45 lb bar will overstate every set by a plate or more per side.
Look at the sleeve, not the internet. A 2-inch sleeve is Olympic. A 1-inch sleeve is the other thing. They do not share plates and they do not share a weight.
Women's bar: 15 kg, 33 lb, sometimes 35
The IWF and IPF women's bar is 15 kg. Converted properly that is 33 lb, not 35. It is also shorter (about 2.01 m) and thinner in the grip (25 mm), which is the point of it: smaller hands, less bar mass, same 50 mm sleeves so it still takes Olympic plates.
So why do so many US pages say 35 lb? Because some American-made "women's" bars are manufactured at 35 lb, and because 15 x 2.2 is a lazy 33 that people then round the wrong way. The plate calculator on this site uses 15 kg in kilos and 35 lb in pounds as its women's preset. That pair is a gym convention, not a conversion. If your bar is stamped 15 kg, log 15 kg (or 33 lb). If it is stamped 35 lb, log 35 lb. Do not mix them.
A 2 lb error on a squat is noise. A 2 lb error on a barbell overhead press is a real fraction of the lift. Same rule as the EZ bar: the lighter the movement, the more the bar weight matters.
Training bars and junior bars
A training bar is usually 10 kg (22 lb), 1.8 m or so, and built for people who are not ready to press or squat a 20 kg empty bar. It still takes Olympic plates on most commercial versions. Log it as 10 kg. An empty-bar warm-up on this is not the same warm-up you will do later on the men's bar.
A junior / youth bar sits around 5 to 8 kg (11 to 18 lb). Same idea, smaller. Neither is a women's bar. If you switch between them across a block, switch the bar in the log too.
How to work out the weight of an unmarked bar
In order of reliability:
- Read the bar. End caps, the inside of a sleeve, and the centre knurl are the usual stamp or sticker spots. 20 kg, 15 kg, 45 lb, 35 lb, 10 kg: any of those is the answer.
- Identify the model. A manufacturer name plus a length is enough. Spec pages list the weight. This is the accurate option when the stamp has worn off and the bar is otherwise obvious.
- Measure the sleeve. 50 mm means Olympic plates and, on a straight 7-foot bar, almost certainly 20 kg or 15 kg. 25 mm (1 inch) means you are not on an Olympic bar and you should not assume 45 lb.
- Weigh it. Bathroom scale: your bodyweight, then your bodyweight holding the bar, subtract. Crude, close to a kilo, far better than guessing. Two people and a luggage scale under the middle of the bar also works.
- Ask the gym. Someone ordered it. Someone has the invoice.
Once you have a number, use the same one every session. A barbell deadlift logged against 20 kg in March and against a guessed 15 kg in June is not a 5 kg PR. It is a filing error.
Other bars on the rack
A straight Olympic bar is the standardised one. The rest of the rack is why people search this question and then still get the log wrong. Each of these has its own range; the linked posts cover how to check the one in front of you.
| Bar | Typical weight | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Trap / hex bar | 20-34 kg (45-75 lb), often ~25 kg | Trap bar weight |
| EZ curl bar | 7-11 kg (15-25 lb) | EZ curl bar weight |
| Safety squat bar | 25-36 kg (55-80 lb) | Safety squat bar weight |
| Smith machine bar (starting resistance) | 5-15 kg (11-33 lb) | Smith machine bar weight |
A trap bar deadlift and a straight-bar deadlift are different lifts on different bars. An EZ bar curl is not a 20 kg curl with a bent shaft. A safety bar squat is not a back squat with padding. Log them separately, with the right bar weight.
Deadlift, squat and bench bars in specialised rooms are usually still 20 kg. Whip and knurl change. The weight does not.
Loading the bar, then logging it
Add every plate on one side, double it, add the bar. A 20 kg bar with a 20 kg and a 10 kg plate per side is 80 kg. The calculator above does that arithmetic and remembers a custom bar if yours is not 20.
Log the total, not the plates. And log the bar type. "80 kg bench" on a men's bar is not "80 kg bench" on a Smith machine, and it is not "80 kg" on a 15 kg bar with the same plates. If you train in more than one gym, this is the whole game. Adiletix will keep the bar type with the lift so the trend line is about you, not about which rack you used.
