How Long Should You Rest Between Sets?
Rest 3–5 minutes for strength, 1–3 minutes for hypertrophy and 30–60 seconds for muscular endurance. Here is why the ranges differ, how to tell when you have under-rested, and how rest interacts with how hard the set actually was.
How long you rest between sets depends on what the set is for: 3–5 minutes for heavy strength work, 1–3 minutes for hypertrophy, and 30–60 seconds for muscular endurance. There is no single correct number, because rest is not the goal — recovering enough to make the next set count is the goal.

These are general training guidelines, not prescriptions. Bodyweight accessory work and heavy compound lifts sit at opposite ends of this table for good reason.
Why the ranges differ
Two different things recover on two different clocks.
Force output — your ability to produce a near-maximal effort — takes minutes to come back. It depends on the phosphocreatine system replenishing and on your nervous system being ready to fire hard again. This is why heavy triples need long rests: cut the rest short and the next set is limited by fatigue rather than by strength, so you are no longer training the thing you set out to train.
Metabolic stress — the burn, the pump, the accumulation of fatigue within the muscle — is partly the point of higher-rep work. Shorter rests keep it elevated. That is why endurance-focused sets deliberately rest less.
Hypertrophy sits between the two, which is why its range is the widest. You need enough recovery to keep the reps and the load respectable, but you do not need to be fully fresh. If you are training a muscle to grow, a set taken close to failure with good load is what matters more than the clock.
Rest and effort are the same conversation
The reason the ranges above are ranges is that how long you need to rest tracks how hard the last set was. A set of five at an easy effort needs far less recovery than a set of five that left you with nothing in the tank — same reps, same exercise, completely different rest requirement.
That is what RPE captures. RPE (rate of perceived exertion) rates a set by how many reps you had left in reserve: an RPE 10 set is one where you could not have done another rep, RPE 8 leaves about two. Programme the effort, and the rest interval follows from it.

The calculator above works from the other direction: give it your one rep max, the reps you are doing and the effort you are targeting, and it prescribes the load. Set the effort high and you should expect to sit at the top of the rest range for that goal. Set it lower and you can move faster between sets.
How to tell you have under-rested
You do not need a stopwatch to know you cut it short. The signals, in the order they usually show up:
- The same weight feels harder. Your RPE climbs across sets while the load stays fixed. Some of this is normal and expected. A jump of two or more points from set one to set three usually is not.
- Reps drop off a cliff. Losing a rep or two across sets is ordinary fatigue. Going 8, 8, 5 on the same weight means set three was limited by recovery, not by strength.
- Bar speed slows visibly. The last rep of a set should be slow. The first rep being slow is a recovery problem.
- Technique degrades before the muscle does. Form breaking down early is often a fatigue signal rather than a skill one.
- Breathing has not settled. On heavy compounds especially, starting a set while still breathing hard means bracing will be compromised.
If two or more of these show up, add 30–60 seconds and see whether the next set holds up.
Rest between exercises, and supersets
Between exercises, you generally need at least as much rest as between sets of the exercise you are about to start — and often you get it for free while moving equipment and setting up. The exception is starting a heavy compound lift: give it a proper rest even if the previous exercise was light accessory work.
Supersets deliberately remove rest between two exercises, then rest after the pair. They work best when the two movements do not compete for the same recovery — an upper-body push paired with a lower-body pull, say, or an accessory lift paired with a stretch. Superset two heavy compounds that use the same muscles and you get the fatigue cost of short rest without the training benefit of either exercise.
Practical advice
- Time it, at least for a while. Almost everyone under-rests on heavy sets and over-rests on accessories. A timer for a couple of weeks recalibrates both.
- Rest the same way each session for a given lift, so week-to-week comparisons in your log mean something.
- Longer is rarely a problem. Resting five minutes on a set that only needed three costs you time. Resting one minute on a set that needed three costs you the set.
- Adjust with the load, not the calendar. As the weight goes up on a lift over a training block, the rest it needs goes up with it.
